Distracted Driving

FAMILY OWNED | FAMILY FOCUSED | FAMILY DRIVEN

From billboards to imaginary arguments, any distraction can become dangerous at highway speeds. This FMCSA guide includes 6 CMV tips and several anecdotal examples for avoiding distraction. One story is from a 2008 crash when a CMV driver ran into the back of a school bus, ejecting one student and sending more than a dozen kids to the hospital. “The CMV driver was distracted by drinking a soda and did not see the school bus, which was stopped with its lights flashing and its stop-arm extended.” Fortunately, none of the injuries were life-threatening.

As a professional driver, you know how (and when) you can sip a drink without causing an accident, but it’s easy to get complacent. You must remain aware of your surroundings, especially while the vehicle is moving. Whether you’re adjusting the radio or reaching for a snack, stay aware of the risk that comes with taking your eyes off the road.
